Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis are not prominent. In fact, the only visible symptom is an unusual and nasty vaginal discharge. This problem is caused when a vaginal bacterium spreads excessively. The amount of vaginal discharge depends on the severity of the condition. In the past, this medical condition was called Gardnerella vaginitis as it was thought to be caused by this species of bacterium. Today it is known as bacterial vaginosis because numerous species of bacteria live in the vaginal area. The problem could be caused by an overgrowth of any of these bacteria. Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis are indicated by a vaginal discharge which is accompanied by a nasty odor caused by the bacterial imbalance. While it is unpleasant and embarrassing for any woman, bacterial vaginosis is generally not harmful. Having said this, you should always consult your doctor about any unusual discharge to ensure that you don't have Chlamydia or gonorrhea. Chlamydia occurs when the species, chlamydia trachomatis, manifests itself in the cervix or urethra. It can also occur in the rectal area or even the throat. The only obvious symptom of Chlamydia is the same discharge associated with bacterial vaginosis. Gonorrhea and Chlamydia pose much more of a threat because they can be sexually transmitted. Bacterial vaginosis may be linked to certain identifiable factors such as cigarette smoking, having multiple sex partners, and vaginal douching. While it may be helpful to bear these in mind, there is no concrete medical evidence as yet because even women who are not sexually active can have this problem. As pointed out previously there are no other specific symptoms, apart from the nasty smelling discharge. The color of the discharge has a gray-white and it is has a watery consistency. It is more evident after sex. Although this medical condition is not dangerous, have it checked by a doctor.
