Bacterial vaginosis cause immense discomfort, but how? Simply, it is an imbalance between the bad bacteria and the good in a women's body. What causes the imbalance does not have a simple answer either but researchers can point to three contributing factors; intercourse, antibiotics and non-pH wash products. Sexual intercourse can sometimes result in vaginosis, which is characterized by a foul discharge. Most feminine wash products are pH friendly, meaning they are made to make sure a women natural pH is not lowered. When using a non-pH friendly product, two different outcomes can occur. A non-pH friendly soap can cause yeast infections and vaginosis. A yeast infection can be triggered when the microorganisms die off causing the Lactobacillus to work even harder. Vaginosis occurs when the Lactobacillus dies making the microorganisms reproduce rapidly which in turn makes a women's acid level rise. Bacterial vaginosis cause an imbalance between the good bacteria and the bad. Researchers have found increased numbers of harmful bacteria such as Mobiluncus, Bacteroides and Gardnerella vaginalis in infected women instead of the beneficial Lactobacillus. They are investigating how these microbes may have a role in creating vaginosis.
