When a person gets sick, one of the major symptoms he will be feeling is pain. Pain is considered in the medical world as the sixth vital sign and should be treated immediately in order to give comfort and relaxation to the person. Pain is also a major symptom when it comes to Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS. The pain is caused by the spasms that your colon have when an IBS attack happens. An attack happens when a trigger is introduced into the body and the most common triggers are food based. Here are some of the most effective ways for a person to deal with pain which comes from IBS.
Since people would want immediately relief, most especially when they are in extreme pain, pain relievers are one of the main medications given to these kinds of patients. If you are on home care, it is highly recommended that you do not buy any over the counter medications and try to get a prescription from your doctor in order to be sure that you will not react differently to that drug. Also, you need to remember to give the medication before the pain has reached an unbearable level. This would be useless by then. Give the medication early on when the pain is just starting. IBS spasms tend to increase with time and as such, pain intensity increases as well.
For the psychological approach, you may make use of the theory known as the gate control theory. The premise of this theory is that a person can learn to block out the pain by being more aware of your body. This is not applicable to everyone because this technique requires a good amount of concentration and self-awareness to work effectively.
Relaxation techniques and exercises are one of the most effective ways to deal with any kind of pain and not just pain caused by IBS. A good example would be deep breathing exercise. This decreases the pain as well as decreases the stress level that you feel on that occasion. Once you have mastered a relaxation technique that works really well for you, you can even call on it when an acute attack happens. Just remember that you need to concentrate on what you are doing and that you do not get distracted because a break in concentration might ruin it all.
Another relaxation technique is the use of visualization wherein you visualize any object, place, or person that relaxes you. By doing this, you shift your attention from the pain into the item that you are imagining. A good pair to your relaxation techniques is a good cup of herbal tea which calms the nerves and soothes the body. Ginger, peppermint, and chamomile tea are the most recommended.
Another home remedy for abdominal pain would be the use of a heating pad. The heat does not actually have an anesthetic or an analgesic effect but it has a relaxing effect. This soothes the part of the body that it is in direct contact with which, in turn, decreases the pain that they person feels.
